Live Blues Music
Beale Black and Blue: Life and Music on Black America's Main Street by Margaret McKee, For much of this century, blues musicians like W. C. Handy, Booker White, Lillie May Glover, B. B. King, Bobby Blue Bland, Muddy Waters, and even Elvis Presley gravitated to Beale Street, in Memphis, Tennessee, to learn and practice their art. For many of them, the environment they encountered and helped to create there provided an escape from the poverty, despair, and anonymity that had marked their lives. Beale Black and Blue is an intimate and lively history of Beale Street and of the musicians who made its name synonymous with the blues. In the first part of the book Margaret McKee and Fred Chisenhall provide a social and political history of Beale Street from the turn of the century through the 1970s, from its heyday as an important center of black commerce and culture to its latter-day decline brought on in part, ironically, by the successes of the civil rights movement, which helped integrate blacks into the wider society. Following this section is a series of interviews with many of the musicians who were drawn to Beale Street. Despite the hardships and mistreatment some of them endured, they reflect fondly on their lives and careers. For anyone interested in the history of one of America's most important and enduring art forms, Beale Black and Blue is a book not to be missed.

"Bluestock:" Today we're having our very own musical concert, right in our backyard! Toni Braxton joins Tickety to sing the "Planets Song," Macy Gray and Periwinkle sing "The Dance Song," and we have a very special reggae Mailtime with Mailbox and India Arie. Throughout the concert, we play Blue's Clues to figure out what song Blue is going to sing at the end of the concert. And it's not just any kind of Blue's Clues, today we're finding musical clues and recording them with our Handy Dandy Kazoo! We sing "Old MacDonald" with Blue and all our celebrities before going to Blue's Room to sing a very special rendition of "Twinkle, Twinkle Little Star" with some real live stars (who we learn are actually glowing balls of gas!). At the end, we reflect in Journal about how it feels to sing songs you love. "Skidoo Adventure:" When Joe greets us today he can't wait to show us his and Blue's creation a giant craft project called Wacky Wild World! We skidoo in and right away, something wild happens and our picture of home blows away! How will we get back home? By going on an adventure, of course! We need to find four magic letters throughout the world to get us home. In our quest for letters, we figure out what to use to cross a river, help blow on a bubble to get Joe and Blue across a pit, figure out what to use to reach a letter that resides on the moon, and make a magic carpet float by clapping. Once we've found all our letters, what magic word do they spell? Home! Chanting the magic word brings our picture of home to us and we skidoo back home. It's good to be home.
